Color Coated vs Plain Galvalume

Deciding between aesthetic multi-layer coatings and the raw industrial look of plain Galvalume.

Color Coated (PPGL)

Prepainted Galvalume (PPGL) features a primer and topcoat (RMP/SMP/PVDF) over the metallic coating. It offers enhanced protection and aesthetics.

  • Premium aesthetics & branding
  • Extra layer of barrier protection
  • High SRI shades for cooling

Plain Galvalume (Bare)

Bare Galvalume has a distinctive 'spangle' finish with a thin organic coating (AFP - Anti-Finger Print). It is the standard for high-performance industrial sheds.

  • Lower cost (no paint markup)
  • No risk of paint peeling/fading
  • Native heat reflectivity
Property Color Coated (PPGL) Plain Galvalume
Aesthetics High (Vibrant Colors) Industrial Metallic Silver
Corrosion Resistance Highest (Paint + Metallic) High (Metallic Alloy)
Heat Reflectivity Variable (Depends on Color) High (Natural Aluminum)
Maintenance Occasional washing required Low Maintenance
Price Premium Economical

Pro Tip: The SRI Factor

"If energy efficiency is your goal, choose Off-White or Torres Blue color coated sheets. They have a higher Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) than bare galvalume, meaning they reflect more heat and keep your shed even cooler."

The Multi-Layer Advantage

Anatomy of a Color Coated Sheet

Unlike plain galvalume which has one metallic layer, PPGL sheets feature a 7-layer protection stack: Cold Rolled Steel core, Al-Zn coating, Chemical Pre-treatment, Primer (top & bottom), and the final Finish Coat. This makes it highly resistant to the 'cut-edge' corrosion often seen in coastal zones.

  • 7 Back Coat
  • 6 Al-Zn Metallic Coating
  • 5 Steel Base
  • 4 Al-Zn Metallic Coating
  • 3 Pre-treatment Layer
  • 2 Primer Layer
  • 1 Top Coat (Finish)

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does the paint peel off over time?

A: With premium brands like TATA and JSW, the paint is oven-cured and chemically bonded. It will not peel under normal weather conditions. Fading only occurs after 10-15 years of extreme UV exposure.

Q: Is plain galvalume cooler than color sheets?

A: Initially, yes, because of its high reflectivity. However, 'cool roof' colors like white or light gray actually outperform plain galvalume over time as the plain metal surface oxidizes and loses its shine.

Q: Can I paint plain galvalume later?

A: Yes, but it requires special etching primers. It is always more cost-effective and durable to buy factory-prepainted (PPGL) sheets.
